As the end of the main series approaches, Taylor Sheridan has blessed Yellowstone fans once again with a whole new spin-off. This time, Yellowstone 2024 will skip historical tales and take us into a new era for the Dutton family tree.

This is bittersweet for fans, who are still reeling from the fact Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 will be the end of the main show. Still, if goodbyes need to be said, then at least the modern-day Dutton ranch won’t be gone for long.

While this next chapter of the Yellowstone universe could be a while off, Duttonheads still want to know everything they can about the newest Taylor Sheridan show. So, what’s going on with Yellowstone 2024? Here’s what we know.

What is Yellowstone 2024?

Yellowstone 2024 is a spin-off of the main Yellowstone series and was officially announced in November 2023.

It’ll likely take place after the final bunch of Yellowstone episodes in the main timeline, which are due to arrive in November 2024.

The spin-off was reported by Variety alongside a second, Yellowstone 1944, meaning we can look forward to another taste of the Duttons, both past and present, once again. 

“On the heels of 1883 and 1923’s success, our new planned spin-offs, 1944 and 2024, will take audiences on a thrilling, new and unexpected journey with the complex and compelling storytelling that has become a hallmark of the franchise and has helped turn it into a worldwide cultural phenomenon — thanks to the creative mastermind of Taylor Sheridan,” said Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios.

Is there a Yellowstone 2024 release date?

There’s no confirmed Yellowstone 2024 release date just yet.

The spin-off is still in development, so late 2025 is the very earliest we can expect it.

There are a couple of things Taylor Sheridan needs to check off his to-do list first. For one, there’s the flagship Yellowstone series and 1923 Season 2 to finish up.

He’s also moving full steam ahead with his non-Yellowstone projects, like Mayor of Kingstown Season 2 and Tulsa King Season 2. Oh, and there’s also his new drama series, Landman, currently in pre-production.

Sheridan is one of the busiest figures in TV right now, so it’s likely there won’t be word on a Yellowstone 2024 release date until next year.

Who’s in the Yellowstone 2024 cast?

The Yellowstone 2024 cast hasn’t officially been confirmed yet.

However, a rumor (which came to light via Puck in May 2024) suggests that Cole Hauser, Kelly Reilly, and Luke Grimes have all signed on to reprise their Yellowstone roles in the new sequel series. This comes after alleged pay disputes that needed to be worked out before anything could be confirmed.

Of course, this is has yet to be confirmed by Paramount, so be sure to take this with a pinch of salt. (However, it would make sense for them to be in it if the new show is a direct continuation of Yellowstone.)

With that comes the possibility of more Dutton appearances (whichever ones are still standing, of course), and maybe even some ranch hands, too. We shouldn’t rule out any member of the Yellowstone cast at this point.

It’s also widely reported that Matthew McConaughey is joining the Duttonverse. All in all, it seems very likely that this could be his entry. Perhaps he plays a long-lost relative of John Dutton? On top of that, Michelle Pfeiffer is also tapped for a starring role. According to most reports, scripts still need to be finalized before anyone commits to signing on. Fingers crossed.

What will Yellowstone 2024 be about?

There’s no official plot for Yellowstone 2024 yet, but it will probably be directly affected by the finale of the main timeline.

If 2024 is a continuation of the main series, everything hangs on where Yellowstone leaves the ranch and the remaining Yellowstone characters by the time of the finale.

If 2024 keeps the Dutton family as a focus, then we expect the battle for the Yellowstone ranch to continue. After all, hasn’t that been the driving force of the entire Yellowstone universe until now?
