6 new movies to watch in June, including A Quiet Place: Day One, and Inside Out 2

A preview of all the major new movies releasing in June, including the Bad Boys: Ride or Die, A Quiet Place: Day One, Inside Out 2, and Horizon: An American Saga.

May was all about sci-fi and action on a grand scale thanks to Furiosa and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, plus Ryan Gosling got his stunt on in The Fall Guy.

June has more of a spread of genres, thanks to a biker movie, the new Pixar flick, a Quiet Place prequel and a Bad Boys sequel, plus an epic new Kevin Costner western.

So looking ahead, the following are our picks of the best new movies hitting screens this month in chronological order, followed by a list of every new movie releasing in cinemas in June, plus a preview of July.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die

Release Date: June 7, 2024

Bad Boys: Ride or Die reunites Will Smith and Martin Lawrence for the fourth instalment in the long-running action franchise. Directing duo Adil and Billal take the reigns, and will doubtless be relieved to see the film in cinemas after their last movie Batgirl was belatedly shelved.

As for plot, Ride or Die finds detectives Mike Lowrey (Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) discovering corruption within the Miami Police Department, and becoming fugitives when fingers are then pointed at them.

Inside Out 2

Release Date: June 14, 2024

Inside Out 2 is a sequel to the 2015 animated classic about the voices in our collective heads. The new movie finds Riley becoming a teenager, meaning fresh emotions entering the fray, with Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust having to contend with Anxiety, Envy, and Embarrassment.

The voice cast is also changing, with Tony Hale replacing Bill Hader, and Liza Lapira replacing Mindy Kaling. But Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Diane Lane, Lewis Black, and Kyle McLachlan return, with Ayo Edebiri and Paul Walter Hauser joining them (as Envy and Embarrassment respectively).

The Bikeriders

Release Date: June 21, 2024

The Bikeriders features some of the hottest acting talent on the planet right now, including Tom Hardy, Austin Butler, Jodie Comer, and Mike Faist. Based on a 1967 book of photos, the plot revolves around a real-life Chicago motorcycle gang, and we had this to say about the movie in our early review of The Bikeriders:

“The Bikeriders concerns the life and times of a Midwestern motorcycle gang, and plays like Goodfellas on choppers. Though while it never reaches the dizzy heights of Scorsese’s gangster classic, the film – which Jeff Nichols both writes and directs – is a good story, well told.”

The Exorcism

Release Date: June 21, 2024

Fresh from good reviews and solid box office for The Pope’s Exorcist, Russell Crowe tackles more demons through high-concept horror movie The Exorcism, which is directed by Joshua John Miller, the son of The Exorcist star Jason Miller.

Crowe plays actor Anthony Miller, who starts to lose his mind while shooting a scary movie, prompting his estranged daughter to reappear, and question whether something supernatural is afoot, or if her father is slipping back into his past addictions.

A Quiet Place: Day One

Release Date: June 28, 2024

A Quiet Place has been John Krasinski’s baby until now, but for this prequel, he went off and made May release IF, handing the horror reigns to Pig helmer Michael Sarnoski.

Taking place at the very start of the invasion — and playing out in New York — A Quiet Place: Day One stars Lupito Nyong’o as Sam, a woman trying to navigate the new world order when deadly aliens with supersonic hearing arrive, and plunge our world into silence.

Horizon: An American Saga

Release Date: June 28, 2024

Kevin Costner loves a Western, from Dances with Wolves and Wyatt Earp, to Open Range, and his TV mega-hit Yellowstone. With Horizon: An American Saga, we get the first instalment in a proposed multi-part epic, with Costner writing, directing, and starring in the string of new movies.

The movie debuted in Cannes, where we wrote this in our 3-star Horizon review: “An American Saga will most likely cater best to those already converted to the joys of the classic Western. The vastness of the American badlands is captured in all their expansive glory by cinematographer J. Michael Muro, with John Debney’s 1950s-inspired score making it almost seem as if John Wayne and Natalie Wood are lingering on the corner of the screen, ready to come out at any second. It is a poignant watch for fans of Costner, too, and a worthy undertaking for those still romantic about supporting the rarer and rarer indulgences of great cinema legends.”
